Japan's chief of Xbox operations, Yoshihiro Maruyama said that while a version of the Xbox 360 console which can read HD-DVD discs is a possibility, the next-generation DVD standard will never be used for games on the platform.

His comments were made to Enterbrain's Famitsu Xbox magazine in an interview, where he expanded on a statement made by Microsoft chairman Bill Gates back in June regarding the potential for a HD-DVD enabled Xbox 360.

His statement could be reasonable considering that that Microsoft couldn't change the media it's shipping games on halfway through the life cycle of a console, leaving owners of the DVD version unable to play HD-DVD games. The Xbox 360 will be equipped with a DVD drive by Toshiba.

I wish they would all decide on a format they're going to use...right now, it looks like consumers have to pick between HD DVD and bluray.

By fighting, they think they are going to make mor emoney, but it's not true...people will go with what's popular and then the other side will be sorry they didn't cooperate in the first place and now they are losing their profit...f they joined to gether into one format it would not only make consumers happy but them as well...

i heard a while back that they might eventually switch to hd dvd, but that just sounds stupid and would not make any sense for consumers.

I honestly don't give what one they pick. The only thing I care about is that all the major industry people pick one single format so I don't have to get 10 different DVD players.

Heh, yeah I'm with xCIAx ... it'd sucks to have to have 3 or even 4 dvd players in the house just to watch dvds :P, it'd get expensive, redundant and pointless. If someone comes out with a DVD player that plays the old dvds as well as both bluray and hd, they'll make a fortune!

Exactly...I'm worried about my monitor not being "HDCP Compliant" also.....
