Eh.

As some of you may know, I ordered me a eVGA 8800GTS 512mb (g92) video card. Well, it arrived today and I got her up and runnin.

(It was shorter than my ati AIW x1900 btw :) )

Well, I'm wondering about a couple things. As some of you also may know, I've ran ATI and specifically All in Wonders for all of my PC history, with the exception of my first card which was some type of sweet Nvidia based 32mb card back in 2001 or so. So, I may just not know what I'm doing...

Anyhow, the first strange thing I noticed is that it seems that my color quality got set to 16bit "medium quality" by default. Why would they do that?

Secondly, while researching these cards before buying I read that the default fan speed is set fairly low (like 30%) and that you need to use a program like Rivatuner to change the default fan speed if you don't want your card idling at 60C (like mine is now) and jumping to 80C on load.

So, I installed the latest forceware drivers off the nvidia site. (Why does it look like "Media Shield" is installed and should I worry? I didnt' see an option to not install it and now I don't see an option to uninstall it...)

I checked out the Nvidia control panel and clicked on "monitor temperature levels" to see what my GPU temp was. It then informed me that I had to install NTune. So, I installed that and tried again. When I click on "monitor temperature levels" it brings up a box that has one side devoted to "performance" with a graph for cpu usage, RAM usage, etc, and one side devoted to "bus speeds". This, obviously, doesn't have a damn thing to do with "monitoring temperature levels". And clicking on everything I can click in that window doesn't yield anything related to temperatures.

So, I ended up giving up on Ntune, installing Rivatuner, and trying it out. However, the latest version of Rivatuner that I could find first gives me this "Unsupported driver error":

...and then will not give me any options to change the speed of the fan.

Only thing I can think is that the forceware driver I'm using is too new to be supported by rivatuner...even though I've read pretty much everywhere that you can use RivaTuner with this card to change the fan speed...

So, the point is I want to change my fan speed and can't. Heck, I can't even see the GPU temp without using ATITool, but I don't think I can change the fan speed in ATITool...

Any of you Nvidier peeps can helps me with dis?

TIA.

ntune is just junk. did you try riva anyway? i would try it. just for the fan thing, though mine is idling around 45C, but then again, i don't game...try the rivatuner, or atitool...

S'allright. I had to manually edit RivaTuner's cfg file to get it twerkin' properly, but twerkin' it be. It was set at like 26% default, upped it to 67% with very little noise difference. On 100% it sounds like a jet is taking off inside my computer.

Btw, so is it normal for Nvidia cards/drivers to set your default color quality to medium like I mentioned in the first post? Seems strange to me.

169.21 (for XP x64)

I guess I'm going to have to try something DX10 soon since I can actually pull it off now.

I forgot to mention changing the fan speed from 26% to 67% gave me a full 10C drop in temp. Now it's idling at 51C.

For the heck of it:

Size comparison. This cracks me up because I read a lot of reviews of this card saying things like "OMG IT'S SO HUGE LOLZORZ!!!1" "I HAD TO TAKE MY HD CAGE OUT JUST TO FIT THIS MONSTER!!!1" Anyhow, yeah, the 8800GTS is big, but the All in Wonder x1900 is a full inch longer and I didn't have any issues in my mid tower.

Ahh...a successful transplant:

S'allrightythen. I'm off to test the real world gaming difference between the two.

For the record here's the benchmark difference (my cpu holds me back on all of these):

I just pressed the button to run the tests, I didn't change anything from stock.

x64 w/x1900

3dmark03: 14781

3dmark05: 9273

3dmark06: 4085

x64 w/8800GTS (G92)

3dmark03: 35200

3dmark05: 14811

3dmark06: 7871

Again, my system is

Opty 148 "SINGLE CORE FTWz0rz Edition" @ 2.815

2 x 1gb ST DDR 500 @ DDR 512

8800GTS 512mb (G92)

blah blah blah
