I've been having some problems folding lately. It seems the version of the SMP Linux client I have has somehow expired so I'll have to get a new one and reinstall it. But at the same time I'm trying to install a Linux distro on a third partition instead of running Ubuntu through VMWare, but the Ubuntu 7.04 and SUSE (I think it's 10.2) CD's I have look like they don't want to work. I'll do what I can to get Linux working and the n I'll be back. But it could take a little time cause I'm pretty busy this week. I have the whole week-end off so I should manage to get something working by Sunday.

As bewin said, several members are inactive and I think it's sad :talker: We gotta find more members - active ones.

Yep, Beta 3 expired on July 1. I just downloaded Beta 4 and replaced the two files (fah5 and mpiexec). It continued the work unit where it was stopped.

What's your processor? I remember my x2 3800+ (clocked at 2.6Ghz) folding 5-10 minutes faster than that on VMware/Ubuntu 7.04. Or maybe you just have a bigger WU.

Man seeing everyone folding again makes me eager to come back...

When I first installed the Linux SMP client on my Intel E4300, I noticed it wasn't as fast as it should be. I did a "cat /proc/cpuinfo" in a terminal and saw that each core was running at 800MHz or something. I turned off frequency scaling (power saving) in the BIOS and now it's 2.1GHz. This is what it looks like now:

Project: 2609 (Run 1, Clone 385, Gen 44)
...
[14:01:05] Completed 250000 out of 500000 steps (50 percent)
[14:26:10] Writing local files
[14:26:10] Completed 255000 out of 500000 steps (51 percent)
[14:51:16] Writing local files
[14:51:16] Completed 260000 out of 500000 steps (52 percent)
[15:16:22] Writing local files
[15:16:22] Completed 265000 out of 500000 steps (53 percent)
[15:42:15] Writing local files
[15:42:15] Completed 270000 out of 500000 steps (54 percent)
[16:10:40] Writing local files
[16:10:40] Completed 275000 out of 500000 steps (55 percent)

p2608 and p2609 take a lot longer than p2604 and p2605. Which is stupid because they're not worth as much, but I don't pretend to understand the point system.

I guess I just have a bigger piece of folding, because it's running at full throttle, and all working fine as far as I can see

It's not so bad, and anyway the goal is to save lives. It's not a competition, is it? :)

Just thought I'd let you guys know what I'm up to. Power bills hit me pretty hard the last 3 months. I think PG&E jacked up the rates. The intention was to shut down all my rigs but one as I upgrade my hardware. I gave my Dad an old P-4 lappy and it died. I then gave him another laptop. That happened to be my x64bit folder. After my power saving shutdown of 7 other rigs... I thought this would be a good time to make up for lost time. I have a quad Q6600 running stock with the Windows SMP in Vista 64 for my other team. The rig putting points here right now is another stock Q6600. It is running 2 instances of the Linux SMP in VMware and is kicking the Windows SMP Quad's butt in terms of points. I know there are many AMD fans here but a Quad for under $300? (it beats $600 for a PS3 :victory: ) Think about it! 4 cores from the darkside has me #1 in 24 hour average after 6 days of folding. :victory: :victory: I admit to being as anxious as everyone else to see Barcelona and Penryn.

:)
