A lot of people, if they hear alternative operating system they think of
a: Apple Mac OS X
b: Linux
The most obvious group to start with would be the UNIX based operating systems. A bit of history on Unix.
"Unix is a computer operating system which was developed in the 1970's by Bell Labs in the USA. Unix was developed in the C programming language and was firstly just a command line operating system (later it used graphical interfaces such as the X Window System). Due to it's implementation on lots of computer network workstations, Unix has become one of the major operating system used on the Internet."
Of cause Unix and Linux are similar but linux should not be considered a version of unix as that is incorrect.
Some versions of the unix operating system
BSD Operating Systems: (Which are unix based)
PC-BSD (Free user-friendly desktop-oriented BSD-edition)
Freebsd (FreeBSD is an advanced free and open-source Operating System for Intel ia32 compatible, DEC Alpha, and PC-98 architectures.)
OpenBsd (OpenBSD supports binary emulation of most programs from SVR4 (Solaris), FreeBSD, Linux, BSDI, SunOS, and HPUX)
http://www.netbsd.org/ (NetBSD is a free, open-source, secure, and highly portable UNIX-like Operating System)
Other *Unix based operating systems*
Solaris (Open-source operating system by Sun, freeware for commercial and non-commercial use)
GNUHurd (Open-source (GNU) Replacement for the Unix kernel)
Non *nix based os's
MenuetOS (Menuet is a fully 32 bit assembly written, graphical RTOS for assembly programming. This thing fits on a stiffy disc)
SkyOS (SkyOS is an operating system written from scratch for x86 PC's)
Jnode (Freeware, open-source Java operating system with JIT compiler)
Zeta (Non-free operating system based on BeOS)
Haiku (An open-source effort to first recreate and then extend a most excellent, BEOS)
ReactOS (Opensource effort to develop a quality operating system compatible with Windows NT applications and drivers)
This is just a basic list, always new OS's to be found. Thanks to the following website (which made this post a lot easier)
