images/news/windows.jpgStarting in late August, Microsoft is planning an "infrastructure update" to the Windows Update and Microsoft Update services, requiring changes in the update code on users' Windows systems. As Microsoft puts it: "Updates to the services and Windows code are required from time to time to maintain and improve service quality, reliability, and operations."

This update will be "required" in the sense that if you do not apply it, some time soon you may not be able to check for updates successfully or perform other updating actions. It sounds from their descriptions as if the communication protocols between Windows clients and their servers will change and old client update code won't be able to talk to the servers in all cases. This makes sense for Windows Vista and subsequent products and Automatic Updates in all products, but in Windows XP manual updates are handled by an ActiveX control which can be updated on the fly.

If you have automatic updates set to install download updates then you will receive this update as well.

Windows Update and Automatic Update settings will remain unchanged by this update, which will improve the Windows Update UI on Vista and Windows Server 2008, providing "a more visible and detailed description of updates as well as improvements in how users are notified about service packs." There will be no UI changes for Automatic Updates.
