images/news/vista.jpgHow does the latest build of Windows 7 stack up against Windows Vista? The answer seems to be very well if the benchmarks run by ZDNet are anything to go by. If Microsoft keeps up the good then Windows 7 should be head and shoulders better than Vista. 'What we have here is one set of data points for one particular system, but I think that the results are very promising. The fact that Windows 7 comes out on top in three out of four of these tests at this early stage is very promising indeed. The boot time and PCMark Vantage results are particularly good.

It seems to be better then Vista, which really should not be hard to do... However does it say how it does compared to XP?

Sounds promising. I plan on upgrading to 7 (from XP), so they best not screw it up. :P

I actually have high hopes for Win7 :cc_surrender: (plus it sounds better, i7 running Win7 lol) :cc_surrender:

It's 'par for the course' that Microsoft always 'balls up' (Vista) with a new OS and then correct their shortcomings with something better (Win7).

ME anyone? (have we been there before?)

Of course, in the meantime, they take stupid money from stupid folks willing to participate in their antics. ;)

MS never got a penny from me during that charade, they may well do with Win7 though, here's hoping!

Windows 7 will be a 'minor' realease, unlike Vista which was a major one. Win7 has the same Kernal/core as Vista with some 'window dressing, Server 2008 comes to mind. Other than the few interface enhancements I would not waste my time or money if you already have Vista/Client, if not then upgrade, or wait for the next 'major' release of Windows. Win7 is like Win98 2nd edition, or SP2 for XP, a nice improved release, but that's all.

Do not be fooled by the 'cosmetic hype' because that is all it is, look under the 'Bonnet' and you will discover for yourself that Windows 7 is actually Version 6.1 not 7, a minor release...there is still more to come a-ways-down-the-track! Vista is Windows 6.001 (with SP1).

If you go for so-called 'benchmarks' (which can be highly manipulated), like Stats, then it may startup faster, perform better, than Vista under certain conditions, but at the end of the day you still end up with a 'MINOR' release, with the same CORE/KERNAL as Vista's! I have been using Vista for over a year now, and initially there were some minor irritations, but it is overall pretty sound and 'robust' especially after SP1, but that was the same with XP for a while, and it did not really come-of-age until 'SP2' years later! People have short memories; the same argument was touted in favour of Win98 2nd edtion..."XP is crap, unstable, stick with 98" came the cries!

Remember Windows 'Server 2008' is still maturing, and Vista is based on 2008, so will be so-called Windows 7. X64bit drivers will still be playing catch-up for some time to come!

So take the dive you lot, and stop procrastinating!

BTW Windows 7 will have a '32bit/x86' version after all...Microsoft have decided not to take the plunge, fully into X64 computing yet! Another indication that this is not a 'MAJOR' release of Windows besides all the MS hype and other surrounding it!

yeh, I agree with you mo, I'm wondering if I should abuse my modding power now...

Obadiah:
You are ranting imo. You keep shouting that it's 'nothing new' and stuff, but I get the feeling you have actually totally no clue what 7 is about, since you keep rejecting tests and benchmarks by just saying it's more of the same. Please come up with some real, proven arguments?

The night is still young, the days are still early...no one knows for sure how Windows 7 (6.1) will pan-out, or live up to the Microsoft propagandist...did Vista, and whatever happened to 'WinFS'?

Microsoft cited: "[We are not going to] introduce additional [in]compatibilities, particularly in the driver model. Windows Vista was about improving those things ... Memory management, networking, process management, all of the security hardening, all of those things will carry forth, and maintain the compatibility with applications that people expect. Windows Vista established a very solid foundation, a multiyear foundation, particularly on subsystems like graphics and audio and storage and things like that, and Windows 7--and then Windows Server 2008 built on that foundation, and Windows 7 will continue to build on that foundation as well." (MSDN)

This is what I am trying to say...my case rests!

IF, and thats a big ? there, You have vista then win7 might not be a big improvement but if your upgrading from xp then skip vista altogether is what most of us are saying.
