images/news/internet.jpgAnyone who persists in illicit downloading of music or films will be barred from broadband access under a controversial new law that makes France a pioneer in combating internet piracy.

“There is no reason that the internet should be a lawless zone,” President Sarkozy told his Cabinet yesterday as it endorsed the “three-strikes-and-you’re-out” scheme that from next January will hit illegal downloaders where it hurts.

Under a cross-industry agreement, internet service providers (ISPs) must cut off access for up to a year for third-time offenders.

i guess it is totally natural for humans to strive for a totalitarian state...gives them comfort knowing they are being watched over...

edit: i'm sorry if i offended any french peeps with the pic and duffus blurb. i am part french, so i didn't think about it at the time... :friends:

So if you hire a car from a rental company and use that said car to do a bank robbery, the rental company should be punished?

Yes. You would be. It's called 'handling stolen goods', and carries the same penalty as the bank robber would get. :chrisno:

UK law of course, I dunno about elsewhere. :clarky:

Canada is passing a law that fines you $500 if you download illegally. The law is mostly for people who host torrents, though I'm wondering if it will be a problem for people who use torrent groups that rely on seeding to increase downloading...

Sarkozy just doesnt want people downloading his ex-wifes CD for free (he has the interests of the children at heart). Overall its a stupid law.

A lot of more industrialized countries are bending for the US now, including Sweden, which just passed a law to monitor internet traffic leaving the country..
