Microsoft Taking Official Petitions to Keep XP Alive

images/news/windows.jpgIf you can remember back a few weeks, Steve Ballmer went on record saying that Microsoft would consider extending the life of Windows XP if enough people asked for it. Afterall, many people don't want to upgrade to Windows Vista because they are perfectly content with XP. The problem was there was no way to ask for it. Sure, you could sign one of the many online petitions, but Microsoft considers those "non-official complaints" and the rest of us simply consider them silly.

Well, word has been passed down to the tech support teams that they are to begin logging any calls that come in for the sole purpose of requesting an extension to the retail life of Windows XP. The calls will be logged and, if enough complaints are filed, Microsoft will consider giving XP some more time.

If you wish to file an official petition yourself, you can simply call the Windows XP Home Edition support numbers for your country and let the operator know that you wish to file an official complaint.

If your country isn't listed, you can visit the Microsoft Support Site, choose your country, choose Windows XP Home Edition as your product and then go to 'Contacts' for the appropriate support number.

Honestly... I see no point in supporting the OS anymore. SP3 didn't add ANYTHING, but an easier installation scheme. They should spend more time on vista and its development and maybe a few other add on packs that would make vista more capable... A better FTP client VPN client and the such?

XP is great, specially for older computers, but other than security vulnerabilities, I see no reason to keep supporting the OS.

Well I cant agree with you there. I have some older machines that have only one purpose, Point of Sale, Dedicated RIP, Vinyl Cutter which software and drivers will only run on XP. I dont really need extended support for these XP machines, but if i need to reformat years down the road, is MS going to stop authentication of XP?

I'm with you on this one, many people and companies both large and small use and need to have XP around, changing over isn't an option for all due to cost and such...keeping XP is better for end users and technically I would think for MS as well, they still make their $$$.
