EA games does it again:

BioWare technical producer Derek French has said that the PC versions of both Mass Effect and Spore will make use of copy protection that will require online validation every ten days to continue working.

"After the first activation, SecuROM requires that [Mass Effect PC] re-check with the server within ten days (in case the CD Key has become public/warez'd and gets banned)," said French in a post on the BioWare forums.

If customers do not come online after ten days, the game will cease to function. "After 10 days a re-check is required before the game can run," added French.

The check is run when users activate the game's executable file, with the first re-check coming within "5 days remaining in the 10 day window."

According to French, Maxis' Spore will also make use of the same scheme: "[Electronic Arts] is ready for us and getting ready for Spore, which will use the same system."

French also noted that the online requirement will be clearly labeled on the games' packaging.

From what I read, it's checking twice, once on installation, once after ten days, and then it's done, or am I missing something?

Nope, it will check for it every ten days. I have a dictionary software (are they being cracked that much? :P) that uses a similar scheme: I do not need the CD to use it but whenever I try to run the .exe file more then 20 days after the last check it asks me to insert the CD to verify that I do possess the software and I didn't only install it and gave it to someone or something like that. I don't know if it would work with a copy of the CD, it's probably not that hard to crack and that's probably why Mass Effect and Spore connect to the server.

I think it's a nice idea, as long as it is transparent. I mean, if the game connects to the server every ten days when you run it but it does not slow the loading of the game and you don't get to have a "connection screen" or anything, why not?

This is gay. What happens if you go on vacation for two weeks? You have to buy a new copy??? This is why I have somewhat given up on PC gaming. Consoles you don't have to deal with all this crap!!

No you don't get it. Every ten day from the day you first activated your game when you start it it will connect to the server. If on the 10th (or 20th or 150th) day you don't use the game it doesn't matter, the next time you will start the .exe file the game will connect to the server that's all. I see no problem with that if it helps counter cracking of the games, as long as this process is not a burden for the user, as I expressed in my previous post.

The problem is... its usually a burden for the user.. The crackers will always crack it... If you have played bf2, bf2 connects EVERY single time... so its no different, but when you don't have a well designed system... Problems are usually for the fair people that buy the software.
