images/news/internet.jpgWith P2P file-swapping still proceeding almost unchecked and CD sales swirling down the toilet, music labels have shown an increased willingness to consider new business models over the last couple of years, even going so far as to drop their once-ubiquitous DRM. One intriguing idea that has been bandied about is levies: pay your ISP, say, five bucks a month, and you can legally listen to all the music you can find. Though such an arrangement raises plenty of questions (should the levy be compulsory, or can people opt out of it?), stakeholders across North America are at least open to the idea.

Continues at ARS Technica

Not everyone uses p2p illegally and those people shouldn't be punished. If it was opt-in and the software/music/movies were all high quality and verified (in other words, something like iTunes+BitTorrent), then I'd be all for it.

Yeah, I would have no problem with some amount of a monthly charge if it opened the flood gates to d/l music. Now I did notice that the article said this...

and you can legally listen to all the music you can find

Now perhaps the word "listen" was not used in the literal sense but then again? If that word is correct, then I would see no need for the additional charge. There are literally 10s of 1000s of songs that I can "listen" to for free now. Almost anythig that I can imagine and by anyone. If all my $5.00 would do would be to allow me more listening, then I will hang on to my moola a little while longer...talker. :graduated:
