images/news/microsoft.jpgIn October 2007, Microsoft unveiled a free web-based service called Office Live Workspace. Offered initially as a private beta, Office Live Workspace is Microsoft's approach to online collaboration that still keeps its cash cow Office product in the driver's seat. The web site acts as a central hub for home users and teams to upload and share documents, without the need for costly servers or group software, but requires Office's desktop software components to be installed in order to perform any substantial editing. Microsoft is removing the lock from Office Live Workspace, opening the service up to any user with a Windows Live ID, and introducing a few major new features.

Getting started with Office Live Workspace is a simple signup process. The online service requires Internet Explorer 6 or later or Firefox 2.0 (Safari support is in the works). Microsoft also provides a plug-in for Office 2003 and 2007 on Windows (more on that later) that allows for interaction with workspaces and files. An Office 2008 for Mac plug-in is on its way and will be released sometime this year.

Will you be giving Office Live Workspace a try?
