images/news/hardware.jpgWith the Christmas tree chopped up and the New Year's resolutions made (and probably broken) the holidays are officially over and the new year has begun. But if you're on the receiving end of a gift from one of the 60% of Americans who purchased a gift card as a present this year, the Christmas season may not be quite over. Now you need to decide what to do with those gift cards and they probably won't be to a place like Newegg where you can geek-out on exotic hardware; instead you're shopping retail.

The MP3 players we will be looking at today represent the shifts in product styles that come with that maturation. From Apple we have the old guard and the new guard; the iPods Classic and Touch respectively. From Microsoft we have the Zune 80, a product that is both the old and new guards at the same time, striving to fix what ailed the first Zune in the process. How do these MP3 players stack up? Let's find out.

I would have liked to see the Zune make more of an impact but its hard in the market. I stood looked at both the iPod and Zune deciding what one I would go with if I were to choose one. I like the look and feel of the Zune but everything out on the market is iPod ready thus already making the decision for me, so I chose none for now (plus all my friends jumped on the iPod wagon so I just use theirs if needed :giggle: )

I just wish there was a better solution on the mp3 player's software. iTunes is OK, but leaves me wanting. The many replacements I've tried for the most part have sucked. I don't know what the Zune's software is like, but if it was better than iTunes I would probably switch.
Anyone like the Zune's little OS? Hmm? :giggle:

I love my little Zune (old 30gb one). The actual OS for the unit is great, but the software for the desktop system (to manage and transfer files) kinda sucks...but in the Zune's defense, i haven't played with the software too much, and i never read any of the manuals or junk. I do wish that there were more 3rd party peripherals for it though. iPod has it beat there.

I always considered the "OS" and the desktop software for these units as the same. Same old crap :worry:
Interface is everthing. It's just not there yet. Honestly I'm not even sure what "there" is. If I did I'd be rich maybe. :D

Personally I use my PDA for music-video-games-office-gps-internet, have two 8GB Hight speed SDs, and Actually never even thought of Getting iPod touch, because it is Ripoff :D

iPod Classic is nice though, I like those Video with "extremely" large storage media.. The Zune is Also nice, but Don't forget, there is lots of nice Hard Disk players over the world.. From Sony, Creative, Panasonic etc.. we should not Focus only on iPod and Zune just because they was made by Apple/Microsoft..

Again, Touch Screen is not innovation for Mp3 player, so basically MS Can't copy, they can just make another TS Player
