images/news/vista.jpgAfter weeks of gruelling troubleshooting, I've finally had it confirmed by Microsoft Australia and USA -- something as small as swapping the video card or updating a device driver can trigger a total Vista deactivation.

Put simply, your copy of Windows will stop working with very little notice (three days) and your PC will go into "reduced functionality" mode, where you can't do anything but use the web browser for half an hour. You'll then need to reapply to Microsoft to get a new activation code. How can this crazy situation occur? Read on for the sorry tale.

lol. i dunno, looks like an MS bait-to-bash article. hilarious. really, why have this on an obviously linux leaning site? maybe because they have to come up with anything to dis the "other guys", because linux is just that bad (as a user friendly desktop OS)? dude, whatever, though another article there has a kernel dev guy tossing it in, and ruminating about the clumsiness of getting 'nix channeled into a desktop entity.

I changed video cards a couple months ago with no problem. I've also added memory and various hard drives for multiple OS and storage. I've installed manufactureres' drivers all the time.

The only time I ran into the "reduced functionality" mode problem is when I copied my entire Vista OS drive to a new Raptor drive-- Vista didn't go along with the copy thing and I got the notice. Luckily my original drive works great- so I didn't sweat it too much.

This happened to me about a month ago out of nowhere. I'm assuming I did add some new driver without thinking about it. It was really easy to fix though. Just called the activation number and asked for a "real person", on of those people trained to do soley what they need to do and nothing more. Anyhow, told this lady my problem and she gave me a new activation number then I was on my way.
