Back when Intel trademarked VIIV, it was a mystery to us. What could it be? The answer came at IDF 2005, where "Viiv" (pronounced vive, as in vibe) was unveiled as Intel's marketing brand for home entertainment products. Straight from the horse:

PCs based on Intel Viiv technology will be easy to use with a remote control and will be powered by a suite of Intel technologies, including a dual-core processor, chipset, platform software and wired networking capabilities.

All PCs based on Intel Viiv technology will ship with a remote control, the Microsoft Windows* Media Center Edition operating system and media software that lets consumers interact with their PC in the same way they operate a TV.

Viiv is Intel's way of prepping for the media center onslaught that will arrive with Windows Vista. As you may know, we expect Windows Vista to come in a wide-array of versions, but most home versions will have media center functionality built-in.

Now it seems that AMD wants in on the branding action. Henri Richard, head of sales and marketing at AMD, told analysts that the company will unveil a brand for entertainment-oriented PCs sometime in 2006.
