images/news/hardware.jpgAntec said Tuesday that it is launching a series of standardized components for small channel vendors and system builders, with an eye toward true "whitebook" notebooks that could be built by just about anybody.

The new components, which interface to the MGM45WU and MGM45RM motherboards Intel launched in mid-July, use a motherboard standard called "Rich Creek 2," which provide standard interfaces for Antec's new keyboards, AC adapters, battery packs, and several components such as integral webcams and Bluetooth modules.

Antec launched the new parts at the Intel Developer Forum

he motherboard spec builds on the "Common Building Block" specification Intel launched in 2006. Intel's CBB spec says that the hard disk drive, optical drive, LCD panel, battery pack, customizable notebook panel, power adapters and keyboards can be built on common components.

Although the dream is to allow enthusiasts to build notebooks as easily as they would build desktop PCs, "when that phase will happen, I couldn't tell you," David Forster, director of channel relations for Antec, said in an interview. Antec is "at the beginning" of a time in which smaller system builders can compete with the likes of Dell and other top-tier OEMs, he said.

I'd be interested-

It does require allot more expertise than building a desktop- components have to fit together just right, the monitor is pretty much set for life and cooling becomes a real problem. Also upgrades are more difficult.

This has been a dream for quite a few years- but the market hasn't been out there.

Using cooler CPUs and such will simply make the cooling issue mute... My main issue has always been video card performance. Its extremely difficult often times to find a laptop that has dedicated memory and/or a good GPU, specially for running vista, w/o getting to the 17" notebooks and/or super higher performance desktop replacement books. I have a 6675us and I couldn't find for more or less a similar price a small laptop that had the 8600M GT or something similar. The 8400M GS is subpar, although it has 128mb dedicated VRAM. I would have payed 100-150 more for a 256 8600M GT. Having the ability to upgrade the video I guess its the most important thing towards this approach.

Hope it finally becomes a reality.
