Going by a post on SlySoft's support forum, it looks like they are already working an alpha version of AnyDVD HD, according to this WesleyTech report, which claims to have reached a stage where it can rip and decrypt every HD DVD disc tested so far. Like how AnyDVD can remove control locks on DVDs, they aim to develop the tool to remove annoying trailers, the lengthy "HD DVD is great" logo and the FBI warning, most of which cannot be skipped generally.
According to the SlySoft Team member that made the post, while Blu-ray has the advantage of capacity, they prefer working on a HD DVD version first due to no region coding, less DRM and the low-cost Xbox360 HD DVD drive that it works with, unlike Blu-ray. So for now, AnyDVD HD will only work with HD DVD, although Blu-ray support may be added later on.
So far, it is not clear how AnyDVD HD currently gets hold of the keys, particularly with it being closed source commercial software. However, it aims to be user friendly without the user having to manually supply the keys, let alone fetch them out of a memory dump. Even if they decide on adding Blu-ray support later, they aim to get at least the HD DVD version complete first. As this product is only in very early stages yet, they will unlikely make any official announcements until the AnyDVD HD is available.

Hummm, you know this could actually be a good thing for Toshiba and their format. It could be a deciding factor for people when buying a high def. format, that is whether or not they can make backups easily.

LOL... I'd recommend immediate purchase of AnyDvd and CloneDVD2 to anyone...and do it now!!! Lifetime updates are included.
Shiet! I puchased a copy of "The Marine" for my son who is a huge John Cena fan. The factory DVD played fine on his older Toshiba DVD player. It would not play on my Panasonic DVD player which is only 1.5 months old.
After backing up the disc with AnyDVD and CloneDVD2, the ripped version played great on the Panasonic once DRM was (cough) removed.
New movies will have you buying new hardware unnecessarily unless you have the right software.
Edit: The factory disc locked up the Panasonic with a black screen. I had to unplug the player and power it on just to eject the disc. 6 different attemps to get it to play all failed with the same result. Unplug to eject disc.

Hey WFO, we have several Panasonics that are awesome!! They make great stuff, you can flash the firmware on those things. Just head over to their website. They probably have a firmware update for it that would fix that.

What are these movie people doing? Are they making it so we have to cleanse the disk before we can watch it?

Thanks Chriso! The firmware updates are probably just for the burners. This was a bottom of the line $60 player only.
