The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Microsoft is due to make a special announcement later today regarding a partnership with Novell.

"Under the pact, which isn't final, Microsoft will offer sales support of Suse Linux, a version of the operating system sold by Novell. The two companies have also agreed to develop technologies to make it easier for users to run both Suse Linux and Microsoft's Windows on their computers. The two companies are expected to announce details of their plan today at a press conference in San Francisco.

In addition, Microsoft won't assert rights over patents over software technology that may be incorporated into Suse Linux, the people said. Businesses that use Linux have long worried that Microsoft would one day file patent infringement suits against sellers of the rival software.

The pact marks an unusual level of cooperation between two longtime rivals. Microsoft has been battling all versions of Linux, but has faced pressure to assure that customers can run both Windows and Linux without problems. "

Microsoft has issued a media alert confirming that CEO Steve Ballmer will make an announcement today.

Linux is open source so how does M$ expect to get around that?

I'm racking my brain for a reason why MS would want to do this. I got nothing. I can only assume it is something evil.

I'll watch the live webcast. Maybe that'll shed some light on it...

http://www.novell.co...rosoft/faq.html

I read the whole thing and I still don't have any idea what it's about. But I don't know much about patent law, I just know that I don't like it. Especially with regard to software patents.

Bill Gates (Microsoft) 1991 said:

"If people had understood how patents would be granted when most of today's ideas were invented and had taken out patents, the industry would be at a complete standstill today...The solution is patenting as much as we can. A future startup with no patents of its own will be forced to pay whatever price the giants choose to impose. That price might be high. Established companies have an interest in excluding future competitors."

From what I read out of the earlier quoted comments of related parties... it looks like eventually MS might patent the Linux Kernel, thus making Linux non-free???

There will be good and bad points, but

Customers are asking for highly reliable, secure, and interoperable solutions. Enabling easy and powerful virtualization of Linux on Windows and Windows on Linux is a great step forward towards this goal.

This is a very good thing in my opinion, will make for example network administration easier in hybrid environments.

Also the support for Windows technologies in Linux would be a good thing, i'd like to see that.

Under the patent agreement, customers will receive coverage for Mono, Samba, and OpenOffice as well as .NET and Windows Server. All of these technologies will be improved upon during the five years of the agreement and there are some limits on the coverage that would be provided for future technologies added to these offerings. The collaboration framework we have put in place allows us to work on complex subjects such as this where intellectual property and innovation are important parts of the conversation.

This is in my opinion a bad thing. Is an oportunity to M$ put intellectual property protected by copyrights into Suse Server and force users to pay for some kind of support in a near future.

Another point is that if M$ starts to patent solutions for Linux it will be going against the principles of open code development
