General Motors has finally confirmed that it will put the new-generation Chevrolet Camaro coupe, as seen at the Detroit Motor Show, into production.

After a positive reaction from the media and Camaro fans alike, the muscle coupe has been given the green light to pick up where the last Camaro left off in 2002.

GM CEO Rick Wagoner said today: 'The overwhelmingly enthusiastic response to the Camaro concept continues to remind me of the uniquely iconic place our products can have in customers' hearts. Camaro is much more than a car; it symbolises America's spirit and its love affair with the automobile.'

Design chief Ed Welburn added: 'The new Camaro will be almost identical to the concept, a thoroughly modern interpretation of the 1969 model, considered by many to be the best design of the car's first generation.'

Production will begin at the end of 2008, with sales starting in early 2009. There's no word on right-hand drive versions as yet, however, nor on a Pontiac Firebird sister model. The rear-wheel-drive Camaro platform, which has much in common with the new Holden Commodore underpinnings, will almost certainly be shared with a variety of other GM models, however, including Holdens (next-gen Monaro) and even Saabs.

A series of versions - all with independent rear suspension, rather than a live rear axle, as in the Ford Mustang - will be offered, with manual or automatic transmissions and V6 or V8 engines.

They should all be relatively affordable. Chevrolet general manager Ed Peper said: 'We intend to make the all-new Camaro relevant to younger buyers, while retaining its appeal to current fans. The beauty of the best Camaros is that they have always been beautiful to look at with performance that rivals expensive European GTs. Yet they were practical enough to drive every day and priced within the reach of many new-car buyers.'

Expect the Camaro to go head-to-head with the Mustang and upcoming Dodge Challenger.

IMHO The Challenger has this in the bag looks wise... the camaro's fugly I wish they'd really try to make it look nicer!

I like the basic lines of the car, but hate the front end. Looks like a chevy truck. I wish they would bring back the SS look they had in 67

Actually, I think Pontiac's days are numbered. Soon they will be joining Oldsmobile in the history books!

I got to say bringing it back is still good but I do hope they improve alot

OK I posted this image twice but what the heck I think its better then the one they plan on producing.
